Different Basketball Sizes
The National Basketball Association (NBA) uses a full sized basketball which has a circumference of 29.5 inches. This size is recommended for players who are older than 12.
The international standard size used by the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is a size 6 which is about 28.5 to 29 inches in circumference, only slightly smaller than those used by their male counterpart.
Younger players who are between the ages of 8 and 12 are recommended smaller basketballs with the circumference of 27.25 to 27.75 inches. Children under 8 can play with size 3 balls which are 22 to 22.5 inches in circumference.
There are mainly two kinds of basketball courts: indoors and outdoors. Outdoor courts are rougher and the wrong type of basketball may not bounce properly and will wear down more quickly and easily.
The most common type of basketball is made out of rubber as it is durable, bounces well and can be used in outdoor courts. They are very affordable and usually recommended to beginners.
Professional leagues used basketballs made from genuine leather as they as are soft, although they may feel a bit hard when new. The more they are played with, the softer they get, and develop a cushiony feel which allows for better control. They are made only to be used in indoor courts and are the most expensive kind of basketballs.
Synthetic basketballs are made from composite leather which is less expensive and can be used both indoors and outdoors. You do not need to keep using it, waiting for it to feel soft and comfortable. It has an excellent grip and control and is the ideal and most popular choice for non-professional basketball players.
If you are a beginner, it is recommended that you start with the rubber basketball and once you get better and start playing more regularly you can get a synthetic one.
